POSITION DESCRIPTION

Reporting to the Senior Director – Engineering and Regulations, the Senior Manager Engineering will manage the team of Code, Utility Regulations, and Powerline Safety Engineers through hiring, performance review, mentoring and overseeing the development of teamwork plans while setting expectations to ensure team deliverables are complete.

They will also manage the Ontario Electrical Safety Code development and conduct difficult and complex engineering and technical analysis of problems in partnership with General Managers, Technical Advisors, and Senior Electrical Inspectors.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

    • Leads the team of Engineers by hiring, training, developing teamwork plans, setting expectations and conducting performance reviews resulting in growth and development plans for each member.
    • Provides status reports to the Director related to the accomplishment of tasks and issues management.
    • Serves as the point person for communication, facilitation, and integration with other teams to build strong, sustainable relationships.
    • Supports the distribution regulation 22/04 compliance and audit review and the powerline safety initiative to reduce powerline contacts.
    • Manages the Ontario Electrical Safety Code development and develops any necessary bulletins, Code and Distribution, and other technical documents and articles.
    • Participates in the development of different safety standards at the provincial and national levels.
    • Liaises with external stakeholders including other regulatory bodies, certification organizations, and equipment manufacturers, regarding technical issues, code, and regulatory requirements.
    • Provides an operational consultation service to General Managers, Technical Advisors, and Senior Electrical Inspectors by responding to their enquiries while assisting and advising technical and regulatory personnel on the interpretation and application of electrical codes and electrical equipment product safety.
    • Manages the development of Inspector training material in relation to OESC and Distribution Regulations, including the maintenance of a database of technical questions and responses as needed.
    • Conducts difficult and complex engineering and technical analysis of problems and produces relevant documents and bulletins in consultation with the Director, to resolve any field problems that arise.
    • Attends meetings, maintains awareness of territorial inspection needs, and provides advice on any necessary code changes.
  • Responds to enquiries and provides verbal or written advice on interpreting the Electrical Safety Code, regulations and standards.
  • Maintains an awareness of regional inspection needs, inspection issues, emerging trends in installations, distribution and electrical products, while also exploring opportunities for new programs and process improvement.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or the equivalent level of education.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in, with a minimum of 3 years managing programs and people effectively or recognized equivalent
  • Supervisory experience leading a team of specialist staff
  • Knowledge of the electrical industry, the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and Distribution Regulation, and electrical engineering theory is essential
  • Experience with the design of electrical installations and equipment
  • Experience working in a multi-union environment would be preferred
  • Excellent proficiency in MS Office applications – Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong quantitative, analytical skills and presentation skills
  • Planning and organizational skills and attention to details

  • High level of initiative, flexibility, and self-motivation

Reports to:           Senior Director, Engineering and Regulations

Direct Reports:  7-10

Works Closely with: Engineering and Regulatory Team and technical staff across the company

External Contacts include equipment manufacturers and suppliers, government ministries, contractors, consulting engineers, architects, certification organizations and other stakeholders
